First, in Eisenman I, the design was intended to isolate visitors and give them a physical and personal experience rather than an opportunity for collective remembrance, which is how the designers attempted to change the way monuments can be. Assessment panel meetings were subsequently held in October and November 1997, and discussions there suggest that the design clearly referenced the form of the former Jewish cemetery in Prague, and that therefore the Jewish aspect of the design was obvious to Eisenman. However, after these meetings, the idea of associating this design with the former Jewish cemetery became popular, causing Eisenman to reject this interpretation. This rejection suggests that his interest was in adopting a minimalist form with a grid structure rather than in representing a Jewish aspect. A modification request presented by the project sponsors in the same month was to introduce a space for collective remembrance in this design, and Eisenman and Serra’s responses to this request were divided, with Serra withdrawing from the collaboration in June 1998. On the other hand, Eisenman II, submitted the same month, was reduced in scale to respond to this request, but aimed to extend the space for personal experience beyond the site and into the city of Berlin. 内容記述 | To investigate Eisenman’s ways of design modification during the process from the submission of the initial proposal (Eisenman I) in October 1997 to the submission of the revised proposal (Eisenman II) in the following summer of 1998, this study analyzed press articles and public documents of that time and found the followings.
