 note = {application/pdf, Phytosociological studies of vegetation were done on Iriomote-Island, situated in the southern part of Ryukyu Islands. 46 vegetation types are recognized. Subtropical natural forest vegetation as Psychotrio-Castanopsion sieboldii including 3associations（Adinandro yaeyamensis-Castanopsietum sieboldiiand Quercetum miyagii）is distributed on most of the hilly areas, which attain 470m at Mt. Komidake. Other vegetation types with many tropical species are distributed along the coast,at the mouth of the small rivers, in the narrow valleys of the hills and around the villages. Along the river Nakama grows mangrove forest vegetation as the Sonneratiaalba-community and the Rhizphora stylosa-community. Behind the mangrove vegetation a back mangrove vegetation, also influenced by the tide, is developed, as the Barringtonietum racemosae，the Excoecaria agallocha-community, Melothrio-Hibiscetum tiliacei. On the synmorphological, syndynamical and synecological point of view, this vegetation is very similar to the real tropical mangrove communities of southeastern Asia. On other costal areas live seminatural secondary vegetation types as the Fico microcarpa-Pongamietum pinnatae, Macarango-Bischoffietum and Melano-lepido-tremaetum orientalis, especially near the villages with strong human impact. Grasslandvegetation grows along the road sides or in the fields as Euphorbio chamasyce-Sporoboletum diandi, Veronico javanicae-Anagallidetum arvensis. Many naturalized species from tropical region have been found in these plant communities. On the wet rocky stands in small valleys, live pure tropical natural vegetation types as the Blechno-Cyathetum lepiferae and Ophiiorrhiza japonica var. tashiro-Begonia fenicis-community.},
