The mangrove vegetation, growing uniquely in the seaside, not been the subject of major international phytosociological study. Although the mangrove vegetation in tropical and subtropical area yields charcoal, fire woods，tannin an（lmarine products，and contributes to humanlife. In the field survey in February-March, 1982, phytosociological investigation of the mangrove forest stands, which are natural or semi-natural with little human impact, was carried out at the Island Iriomote, in the southern end of Japan. The purpose of this study is to determine the phytosociological system of the mangrove vegetation in Japan and tropical Asia. This paper is the first of a series reporting the results of such a study in
