The evergreen broad-leaved forest, the characteristic vegetation of the Japanese Archipelago, is mostly coppice forest, i. e. secondary forest ; the natural forest is hardly left intact. In addition the evergreen species increase in number, and the Eg-Quotient MIYAWAIKI 1979 becomes higher in the vegetation of the evergreen broad-leaved forest in the lower latitudes. On the other hand, the natural deciduous forest still remains in northern Honshu and Hokkaido.
