Under these circumstances, the grief that accompanies the bereavementof a pet has come to light. In the current research, we conducted interviews of the elderly who had losttheir pets in order to identify factors that support adaptive pet grief. The first study explored the factorssupporting for the adaptive pet grief, with data analyzed qualitatively. The results showed that, all petowners had support from their family and friends. In addition, the bereaved had a relationship with theirlost pet that continued after the death of the pet, in some form, ―pet cremation, the offering of flowersto the deceased, or recalling the lost pet. These actions are characterized as a continuing bond (CB), andCBs have been attracting attention as a new concept for understanding adaptive grief, different to thegrief work model that describes the separation from the departed as a goal.　The second study examined and described in more detail the CB between owners and pets. Thepresent research is a novel examination of the role of CBs in the relationship between the owner and thedeceased pet, with a focus on the generation of the owner.
