In addition to the research examining both intentional and non-intentional categories, this paper also details categorical usage of the term dementia by focusingon distinctive conversations between patients with dementia and their care givers. The purpose of this research is to clarify how care givers categorize the person they are talking to as “demented” within their daily work. Firstly, I analyzed multiple video recordings of caretaking at nursing homes and private residences and gave a detailed description of the particular methods care givers used when talking to persons with dementia. Specifically, focus was put on body position, eye contact and body contact when the caretaker spoke to the patient. Consideration and compassion towards the patient was also discussed. Secondly, I described how care givers categorized persons with dementia in the act of asking them questions by analyzing videos and recordings of interviews taken at nursing home fieldwork sites. Particular focus was placed on questions used in tests and how dementia was treated within these tests.
