Not only in the reinforcement theory, but also in the self-determination theory (the intrinsic motivation theory), verbal feedback have been regarded as an external reward and it was suggested that positive feedback enhance motivation.  However, the auto-motive theory, which highlights the effect of automatic processes driven by environmental features on nonconscious goal pursuit, suggests that we need new framework of the function of verbal feedback.
