In 1925 there were 111 ordinary （ commercial ） banks in operation – the types of more than half banks were money-lender-like bank, local community or family bank, and unit bank. From 1925 to 1926, more than half banks experienced significant decrease of surplus funds and net profit amounts, which means the business conditions around many banks in Tokyo Metropolis including the major or Zaibatsu banks were already in severe deterioration before 1927. The findings of this paper suggest that the Showa Financial Crisis was caused by the mismatch: the drastic economic policy was proposed without foresight under the delicate situation in banking industry.
