For this study, we asked teachers in charge of special education speech classes in Kanagawa Prefecture to fill out a questionnaire on the present situation and problems of the education for children with hearing and speech disorders. The following results were obtained: 1) In Japan, the resource room system was approved formally in 1993, but the children in the special speech classes were not included in this system. About 77 percent of the respondents said that the children should be in a resource room though they should be considered seperately from children with cognitive and other learning disorders. Among the children in this study, 36% had delayed speech development, 30% had an articulation disorder, 16% had a hearing disorder, 8% had a stuttering disorder, and 4% had a cleft palate. As mentioned above, delayed speech development made up the largest group. 2) Only 47% of the teachers had been trained for this profession advance. No less than 70% were trained after they had been installed as a teacher of children with hearing and speech disorders. This indicates that it is necessary for the teachers to provide sufficient training; about 60% of the teachers said that the present training system was not satisfactory. Among the comments made, the most numerous was that a case study was an especially effective method of training. 57% of the teachers in charge of the special classes had less than 5 years of experience in the position. 3) There was some correlation between: the teacher\u0027s present frame of mind and the amount of satisfaction in their work; their own estimate of their leadership and the amount of satisfaction in their work. The more highly motivated the teachers are, the more satisfaction in their work. The highly they estimate their owm leadership, the more satisfied they are with their work.
